AEO explained
What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
AEO is the practice of getting your business named and cited inside AI-generated answers, where a growing share of buyers now start their research.
Why AEO exists now
Search behaviour is splitting. A large and rising share of people ask a question in an AI chat and act on the answer without ever clicking a traditional result. If the answer names three companies and yours is not one of them, you were invisible at the exact moment of decision, no matter how well you rank in classic search. AEO, sometimes called GEO for generative engine optimization, is the discipline of being one of those named sources.
How answer engines choose sources
- Clear, extractable answers. Content that states a direct answer up front is easier for a model to quote than a meandering article that buries the point.
- Structured data. Schema markup for FAQs, articles, and organisations helps engines understand what your page asserts and who is asserting it.
- Entity clarity. The engine needs to understand what your company is, where it operates, and what it is expert in. Consistent naming across your site and the wider web builds that entity.
- Corroboration. Being mentioned consistently across multiple credible sources makes a model more confident recommending you.
AEO versus traditional SEO
Traditional SEO optimises for a ranked list of links. AEO optimises to be the cited answer. They overlap, good content and technical health help both, but the AEO layer adds direct-answer formatting, richer structured data, and deliberate entity building. You still want to rank, but ranking alone no longer guarantees you are seen. Our own guide to AI SEO in Lisbon goes deeper on the technical setup.
How to measure it
AEO is measured by citations and share of voice inside AI answers: how often an engine names you for the questions that matter, and what fraction of the recommendation you hold against competitors. Track the questions your buyers actually ask, then check whether the major engines cite you when asked. Digiton treats those citations as the real scoreboard, because that is where the buyer now looks first.
Frequently asked questions
What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
AEO is optimising content so AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Copilot cite and recommend your business. Rather than chasing a blue-link ranking, you structure content with direct answers and clear entity signals so an AI quotes you when a user asks a question in your category.
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
Traditional SEO optimises to rank in a list of links, while AEO optimises to be the cited answer inside AI-generated responses. They overlap on content quality and technical health, but AEO adds direct-answer formatting, richer structured data, and deliberate entity building so engines confidently name you.
How do you measure AEO success?
By citations and share of voice inside AI answers: how often engines name your business for the questions your buyers ask, and what fraction of the recommendation you hold against competitors. You track the real questions, then check whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews cite you when asked.
