Most families do not choose a school in Lisbon. They choose a commute, and the school comes attached to it.
Lisbon has more international schooling than a city its size normally carries, and almost all of it sits outside the city centre. That single fact decides more about your year than any brochure will. Shortlist schools first, then pick the neighbourhood, because a nine kilometre trip along the A5 at eight in the morning is not a nine kilometre trip.
Where the schools actually sit
- The western corridor. Carcavelos, Oeiras, Cascais and the Sintra side hold most of the long established schools. St. Julian's, Carlucci American International School of Lisbon, St. Dominic's, Oeiras International School and Redbridge are all in this band, reachable from the A5 or the Marginal.
- The eastern side. Parque das Nacoes has grown its own option in United Lisbon International School, which suits families who want to live in the city and skip the westbound traffic entirely.

Timing, and why late applications hurt
The academic year runs from the middle of September to late June. Applications for a September start are best made between January and March, because popular year groups fill and the waiting lists that follow can run for a full year. Expect an assessment or interview, an English level check for older children, and sibling priority ahead of you in the queue. Have the documents ready before you apply: passports, the last two years of school reports, the vaccination record, a NIF for whoever pays, and proof of address.
The money question nobody asks properly
Ask for the full fee schedule in writing, then ask for the last three years of increases. Tuition is the headline. The rest of it is the enrolment fee, the deposit that rarely comes back, the bus, lunches, uniform, trips, external exam entry fees for IGCSE or IB, and learning support if your child needs it. Ask about sibling discounts and whether paying annually rather than in three instalments changes the number.
