Carnival in Portugal, 2026

Portugal runs at least four different carnivals, and picking the wrong one is how people end up watching a parade they could have seen anywhere.

Carnival moves with Easter, which makes it the one Portuguese celebration people book late for. In 2026 the season ran from Sunday 15 February to Terca-feira de Carnaval on 17 February, with Ash Wednesday falling on 18 February. In 2027 it lands earlier: Sunday 7 February through Tuesday 9 February, with Ash Wednesday on 10 February. If you are planning ahead, those are the dates to hold.

Is it a public holiday?

Not automatically. Carnival Tuesday is not a fixed national holiday in Portugal. The government usually grants a tolerancia de ponto to public services, most municipalities close their offices, and schools generally stop. Private employers decide for themselves. In carnival towns the whole thing shuts regardless of what the official position is.

The four kinds of Portuguese carnival

• Satirical and stubbornly local. Torres Vedras is the one that refused to become Rio. Political floats, matrafonas, brass bands, and a crowd that is overwhelmingly Portuguese. It is loud, cheap and genuinely funny if you follow the news.
• Big floats and Algarve weather. Loule holds the oldest continuous street carnival in the country, running along the main avenue with allegorical floats. It is warmer, more family friendly, and easier with small children than the northern versions.
• Ritual and rural. Podence, in Macedo de Cavaleiros, is not a parade. The Caretos wear fringed wool suits and brass masks and run through the village, and the practice was inscribed on the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list in 2019. Lazarim near Lamego has its own version with hand carved wooden masks.
• Brazilian influenced. Funchal in Madeira runs samba school parades plus the Cortejo Trapalhao on Shrove Tuesday, which is the deliberately shambolic one anybody can join.

Ovar deserves its own mention for running the longest season and the highest production values on the mainland. Estarreja, Sesimbra, Mealhada and Nazare all put on serious street events too.

Planning notes

• Book accommodation in Torres Vedras and Ovar months out. Both towns fill completely.
• Main parades run in the afternoon and again at night. Check the specific municipality programme, because the headline parade is often not on the Tuesday.
• Several towns sell grandstand seats. Everything else is standing, in a crowd, for hours.
• Carry cash for the food stalls and expect card readers to be optimistic.
• February on the Atlantic coast is cold and often wet. Layers, waterproof shoes, and a plan for where to stand if it rains.
• Road closures start early and parking disappears. Trains and regional buses run full on the Sunday and Tuesday.
