Best day trips from Porto, 2026

Porto is unusually well placed for day trips, because the good ones are close and the train actually goes there.

Almost everything worth seeing from Porto sits within ninety minutes, and most of it is reachable by train from Sao Bento or Campanha without renting a car. The two exceptions, Peneda-Geres and the deep Douro, are exactly the two where a car changes the day completely. Plan around that split and the rest is easy.

Guimaraes, the one to do first

An hour and ten by urban train from Sao Bento, running roughly hourly. The castle, the Paco dos Duques and a genuinely intact medieval centre, all walkable from the station in fifteen minutes. Take the cable car up to Penha for the view over the valley if the weather cooperates. Half a day is enough, which makes it the easiest first trip.

Braga, better than its reputation

An hour by urban train, and faster on the Alfa Pendular. The draw is Bom Jesus do Monte, the baroque stairway above the city, reached by a water-counterweight funicular that has run since 1882. The old centre is compact, the cafes are better than Porto tourists expect, and it pairs with Guimaraes if you are moving fast, though both deserve their own day.

Aveiro and Costa Nova

Roughly forty-five minutes to an hour and fifteen by train depending on service. The canals and moliceiro boats are the postcard, the striped fishermen's houses at Costa Nova are the photograph, and the ovos moles are the reason nobody leaves hungry. Costa Nova needs a bus or taxi from Aveiro, about twenty-five minutes, so build that into the timing.

The Douro valley

The single best thing near Porto and the one most often done badly. Options, honestly compared:

Go in September or early October for the harvest, or in spring for green terraces and no crowds. August is hot and the valley holds the heat.

Peneda-Geres national park

Ninety minutes to two hours by car, and effectively car-only if you want to see anything beyond one village. Waterfalls, Roman road markers, wild horses on the high ground, and swimming spots that stay cold into July. Not a good choice without a vehicle.

The coast, north

Vila do Conde and Povoa de Varzim sit at the end of the metro line B, an hour or so from the centre, which makes them the cheapest escape available. Beaches, a working fishing harbour and a striking aqueduct. Viana do Castelo, ninety minutes by train, is the more rewarding version of the same idea.

Practical notes for 2026

Urban trains to Guimaraes, Braga and Aveiro use the Andante card, bought once and topped up. Longer routes need a reserved ticket from CP, worth booking online for the Douro line in high season because it fills. Sunday services thin out everywhere. And check whether a public holiday falls on your day, because Portuguese towns take them seriously and the museums close.
