Can AI work in Portuguese?
Yes, and well, but European Portuguese needs to be asked for explicitly or you will get Brazilian output by default.
Portuguese is spoken by roughly 260 million people and is well represented in the training data of every serious model, so basic capability is not in question. The variant problem

The fix is not complicated, it is just deliberate: state European Portuguese in the system prompt, supply a short glossary of house terms, and include a handful of correctly written examples. Then test with native speakers rather than assuming.
Register and formality
European Portuguese carries formality distinctions that English does not, and a model with no guidance will pick one at random. Decide in advance whether your assistant addresses customers formally or informally and encode it. This matters more in Portugal than in many markets, where the wrong register in a first message to a client sounds careless.
Domain vocabulary
Where models genuinely struggle is specialised Portuguese: municipal planning terminology, legal and notarial language, tax and accounting vocabulary, sector jargon. These appear far less in training data than everyday Portuguese, and the model will sometimes translate the English concept literally rather than use the accepted Portuguese term. Retrieval solves most of this. If the assistant answers from your own Portuguese documents, it inherits your vocabulary rather than inventing one.
Practical checks before you deploy
- Have a native European Portuguese speaker review fifty real outputs, not five.
- Test with accented and unaccented input, because customers type both.
- Check numbers, dates, and currency formatting, which models frequently render in the wrong convention.
- Confirm behaviour when a customer switches language mid-conversation, which is common in Portugal.
